Salish Art

Salish Art

In this unique, accessible and engaging workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals behind Coast Salish art from Stó:lō artist Alysha Collie.

Alysha leads a two part workshop where participants first learn the history of the Coast Salish art form, what Coast Salish shapes are, what they are inspired by and how her culture’s ancestral belongings translate to the Salish art that is created today.

The second half of the workshop consists of an exciting hands-on guided learning experience where participants will take the teachings they learned using a one-of-a-kind Coast Salish shape stamp set (created by Alysha) to experiment with the art form and shapes.

This is a great non-appropriative approach to learn about Coast Salish art from a Coast Salish youth who has the ancestral right to share this knowledge.

In this linocut carving workshop Alysha Collie teaches participants how to transfer their own art onto a rubber stamp. She demonstrates how she uses this art form to explore the positive and negative spaces inherent in traditional Salish relief carving, allowing her to share ancestral Salish stories through her work.

Participants are encouraged to create a piece of art work that is unique and meaningful to them. When completed, their carving of a 2D image becomes a 3D block ready for stamping on papers and textiles.

This workshop empowers participants of all ages to incorporate this accessible carving technique into their own professional artistic practices.
